Károlyi Castle in Carei – The 19th-century knight's castle

The Károlyi Castle was built in 1482 by László Láncz- Károlyi. At that time, this building was just a stone manor house. In 1592 - due to the Turkish threat - Mihály Károlyi fortified the former noble manor house. Later, Mihály's descendants continued to strengthen the fortifications. By 1666, the building had been transformed into a bastion fortress with a protective wall surrounded by a palisade. After the end of the Turkish threat, in 1792, József Károlyi demolished the defensive wall, filled the moat and rebuilt the building. Between 1893-1896 another reconstruction followed. István Károlyi transformed it into a knight's castle, based on the plans of Arthur Meinig, who based his ideas on the castles along the Loire Valley. Then the castle acquired its seven tower bastions and balcony design, and a ditch again surrounded it.
