The Lónyai Castle in Medieşu Aurit – the castle left in ruins

The Renaissance castle in Medieşu Aurit was originally built on the place of a fortification already standing in the 13th century. At the end of the 15th century, the fortress was owned by the Báthori family and later by the Lónyai family. Around 1630, the current layout of the castle was commissioned by Zsigmond Lónyai. Italian bastions were located on the corners of the rectangular mansion with an enclosed courtyard. Above its entrance rose an octagonal gate tower with a drawbridge. Extensive ramparts surrounded the building. In 1670 the castle was confiscated and partially demolished. The remaining part burned down in 1707. In 1732, the estate was inherited by Ferenc Wesselényi, who used the old wall sections to build another castle. This castle was owned by the Bethlen and Teleki families until World War II. The German forces housed an ammunition depot here, which exploded at the end of the war, and the building has been left in ruins since then.
