The Ugron Castle in Zau de Câmpie - built by the architect Lajos Pákei

It is one of the last castles in Transylvania, representing the eclectic artistic style. The building from Zau de Câmpie incorporates Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque features. The estate became the property of the Ugron Family through the marriage of István Ugron and Anna Bánffy in the second half of the 18th century. Passing from father to son, it was owned by István Ugron from 1899. The estate consisted of a stone mansion, a guest house, a family crypt, an ornamental garden, farm buildings, arable lands and forests. István Ugron (1862-1948) continued the castle's reconstruction from abroad before moving home after the First World War. The initial concept of the castle was made by János Bánffy. The actual planning is from 1908 and is the work of Lajos Pákei. It was completed in 1912 and fully furnished by 1918. Here, as in the case of many other larger castles, there is still a lovely but unverifiable custom that the building layout must follow the year's structure. So it has four towers, 12 corridors, 52 rooms with a total of 365 windows. It was left to his nephew István Ugron in 1925, but it was nationalized after his death. After the nationalization, it housed a lung sanatorium and then an orphanage. After the change of regime, the Ugron family reclaimed it.
