Máriaffy Castle in Sângiorgiu de Mureş - The former site of many aristocratic weddings
The Szentgyörgy family owned the manor house on the site of today's castle in the 15th century and later the Tóth family in the 16th century. In the 17th century, the already fortified castle was an important residence of the Petki family, where influential Transylvanian lords often visited. György Rákóczi I, prince of Transylvania attended the wedding of the eminent diplomat, Mihály Toldalagi, and Erzsébet Petki in 1640. The former governor of Transylvania, Count Zsigmond Kornis, is among the dignitaries attending the weddings held here in the 18th century. The castle gained its present form at the beginning of the 1870s during the reconstruction carried out by the Máriaffy family. Following nationalization, the local administration purchased the dilapidated, listed building and restored it to its original splendour after years of restoration. From 2020, it has become a sought-after site for civil ceremonies. Since 2021, it has been operating as a cultural and tourist centre. We can rightly say that Máriaffy Castle has been the venue of most Transylvanian aristocratic weddings since the 17th century.
