Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ditrău – The Neo-Gothic miracle
The largest two-tower church in the Gheorgheni Basin was designed by István Kiss, a well known Hungarian architect, in 1896. Construction took place between 1908 and 1913, and it was consecrated in the same year. Massive pillars support the vaulted ceiling of the Neo-Gothic-style basilica. The shrine is decorated with a secco-wall mural by Erik Paulai, an Italian painter. The church's stained glass windows depicted the 12 apostles made by Miksa Róth. The pulpit and benches and the wooden parts of the main altar were made by Endre Thék, a carpenter craftsman from Budapest. The main altar, known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is made from Carrara marble which is decorated with statues depicting St. Ladislaus and St. Stephen, made by the famous sculptor Lőrinc Siklódi. The large Corpus Christi in the church was made by László Szántó, a sculptor from Timisoara. The tower clock still operates today comes from the former church that stood here.
