The Jesus chapel in Odorheiu Secuiesc – the site of legends

One of the most controversial monuments in Odorheiu Secuiesc is the Chapel of Jesus. Due to the shape of its floor plan, the chapel, situated in the area of the former Village, which is now part of Odorheiul Secuiesc, was considered by many to be from the 13th century. But archaeological excavations have clearly proven that it was built relatively late in the 16th century. It is believed to have been built as a gratitude for the healings made by the salty springs in the area. The small structure is surrounded by a low stone wall with an irregular oval floor plan, to which a simple hermitage is attached inside. Above the present entrance of the surrounding wall, 1771 can be seen. Its painted coffered ceiling was initially made in 1677. Today it is replaced by a less successful copy made around 1903. The most valuable piece of the chapel is the Baroque altar made in the 18th century. It was declared a monument in 1992.
