The Corvin Castle also known as the Hunadeora Castle - The Eagle's Nest of Hunyadies
Transylvania's most beautifully built castle was the centre of the estate that the father of János Hunyadi, Vajk (Woyk), received in 1409 as a donation from King Sigismund of Bohemia. The castle - in its first form - was built after the donation. This former castle was significantly expanded by János Hunyadi and his wife, Erzsébet Szilágyi. After Janos Hunyadi's death, the estate was inherited by King Matthias (Matthias Corvinus), who continued to build and embellish the castle in the 1480s. Matthias' son later became the owner, János Corvin, later was forced to mortgage the castle to Pál Kinizsi, lord lieutenant of Timișoara. Prince Gábor Bethlen made the last significant alterations to the castle, strengthening its fortifications. After this, it had several owners. In 1818, due to a lightning strike, its entire roof burned down. This misfortune was followed in 1854 by another fire. Its restoration lasts from 1868 - with minor interruptions - to the present day. A unique feature of the castle fortress is the Nebojsa (i.e., “fear not”), a tower separate from the building block, which served as a final refuge in case of need and into which a covered corridor leads. This tower has always remained intact even after the fires.
