Ineu Castle - the former border castle of Transylvania

The castle of Ineu was built on an irregular rectangular foundation with cylindrical bastions with portholes at the corners. Outer walls once surrounded it with Italian bastions, of which only a few ruined wall sections remain today. The construction of the castle dates back to 1293. In 1387, the castle belonged to the Losonczi family, and for the next two centuries, they owned the estate. During the 16th century, it was in German, Hungarian, and Turkish hands. It was fortified with a hedge wall, surrounded by ramparts and ditches. In 1595, the armies of Prince Zsigmond Báthori expelled the Turks. In 1645, under the direction of Major General Gábor Haller, the outer walls were built with bastions. Between 1658-1693 once again, it was under Turkish rule. Then later, it belonged to the Austrian empire. The military character of the castle ceased to exist in 1746. In 1870, it was rebuilt by the Shireman Péter Aczél when it gained its current form. Until 1901, it was home to an army base and then a foster home for children with special needs.
