Forray Castle in Săvîrşin - the king’s summer residence
The royal castle was initially built by the Imperial Chamberlain András Forray in the 1830s using material from a hunting lodge dating back to around 1680. The building became the property of the Counts of Hunyadies in the 19th century when it was given a classicist look. After the death of Count Károly Hunyadi, the castle was purchased by the Mocioni family, who were close to the Romanian royal family. From here, it became the property of Michael I. King of Romania, who intended to use it as a summer residence. It began renovating it, but the estate was nationalized in 1945. In the 1980s, it was Nicolae Ceauşescu's villa, and soon after the regime change in 2001, the Romanian royal family took it back from the state. The castle has been open to the public since 2005. Its park features 350-year-old oaks, 170-year-old yew and walnut trees.
